Island Farmer Breaking Barriers for New Market

A local tree farmer is pursuing agriculture in a unique way. Jesse Argent deals in black walnut trees, but not for fire wood, or energy fuel. “I'm trying to create a new market in Canada for sustainable timber, and veneer harvesting.” Argent owns a specialty hardwood and fruiting tree nursery, Havenloft Tree Nursery. He has been working diligently to secure a knowledgeable skill set to foster a foundation, and the appropriate resources necessary for his business.

“Last summer I worked at the Legacy Garden—the large acreage behind the Farm Centre downtown—through a Skills Canada program.” Argent credits his mentor, Phil Ferraro, who runs the Farm Centre. “He has been assisting me with getting my business going.” Argent explains that if one provides proper care, pruning, and appropriate maintenance, a farmer can financially succeed in high-value timber; turning crop into massive profit. But that’s not the only reason why Argent is interested in working with high-value timber. Argent is passionate about sustainability, and promoting the need for biodiversity and reclamation of unused or underutilized farmland.

Argent suggests that harvested walnut trees provide an array of options for the food industry, as walnuts are high in fat and protein. “Black walnuts themselves are prized as a vegetarian protein source. I'm thinking of doing more wholesale nuts to whoever wants to buy them. Not to mention feed for livestock, as only one acre can produce thousands of pounds.” Argent explains that there are vegan protein bar manufacturers, several based out of Quebec, who are always looking to obtain walnuts. But edible tree opportunities don’t stop at walnut trees. “Cherries, walnuts, persimmon, and hickory fruit could very well be used more widely for consumption, and bring in a lot of revenue, and job opportunities.”

Argent has heard from many interested parties—one party in particular is specifically interested in utilizing his trees for silvopasturing—an operation which takes place in a designated area that is mutually beneficial for both grazing animals, as well as soil enrichment for the production of trees.

While many farmers are struggling to stay ahead, Argent says, “As a local farmer, I've been getting wonderful support through the Future Farmers Association, the Farm Centre, Phil Ferraro, and several skills programs." But Argent does make a point to say there has been barriers in pursuing his dream. He hopes there will be more support for new, and seasoned farmers as time goes on, as accessibility to resources and education seems to be an ongoing obstacle.

“Not having enough information, or education, is problematic. You need to network and find a niche that you can make a living in. There are a lot of new forward-thinking individuals entering the agricultural field, which is good to see,” says Argent.

The Island farming community has seen many farmers struggle in recent years—loss of crops, farm foreclosures, and unpredictable seasons, all of which have been a growing concern for farmers’ mental health; but, Argent puts a positive spin on how farming has promoted mental wellness. “For me, farming is akin to spirituality. Connecting to the environment. I've done telemarketing jobs, and stock market trading jobs, but I've never felt happier than when my hands are filthy.” He recognizes it is a difficult and unpredictable trade, but he feels most empowered, and mentally healthy, when he is getting his hands dirty and giving back to a sustainable future.
