Get Your Pump on for the 25th Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off

For the last 25 years, the PEI Giant Pumpkin Growers' Association has been celebrating big pumpkins, in a big way. The Annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off is a one day festival event, which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 6th, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Vesey Seeds Ltd. in York.

Vesey Seeds have been hosting the event on Thanksgiving weekend for a number of years, now. Laurie Smith, event coordinator, says this day isn't just about giant pumpkins, as much as it is about family. "We pride ourselves on putting together a true family day at our venue. It's a lot of fun," says Smith.

There will be hay rides, a BBQ, children's games, pumpkin decorating; and, of course, the great Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off. And the best part, it's free!

The PEI Pumpkin Growers' Association has waived all entry fees this year, in lieu of the event's 25th anniversary.

Registration opens at 8 a.m., and closes at 10:30 a.m. Categories include Giant Pumpkins; Field Pumpkins; and, Giant Squash.

Last year, Eddie Shaw brought the heaviest pumpkin, weighing in at 1594.5 lbs. Local pumpkin farmers and spectators will have to wait to find out if Shaw can hold his title at this year's event.
